The iPhone 3GS arrived in June 2009 with the "S" standing for "Speed": Apple claimed it was up to 2x faster than the iPhone 3G, helped by a 600 MHz Cortex-A8 processor and 256 MB of RAM, double the previous model. It also added 7.2 Mbps HSDPA for faster downloads.
It was the first iPhone with an autofocus camera. The new 3-megapixel sensor supported tap-to-focus and could record VGA video, a capability earlier iPhones lacked. The 3GS also introduced Voice Control for hands-free dialing and music playback, and a built-in digital compass paired with a Compass app.
In fairness, the design was essentially unchanged from the iPhone 3G, keeping the same glossy plastic back, 3.5-inch 320x480 display, and 30-pin dock connector; the gains were under the hood. It launched in black and white at 16 and 32 GB, with an 8 GB model added later. From about $199.
