The iPhone XS Max was the large-screen flagship of Apple's 2018 line — everything the XS offers, scaled up. Its 6.5-inch Super Retina OLED was the biggest display Apple had shipped, with the same deep blacks and HDR as the XS on a far larger canvas for video and reading.

Internally it matches the XS: the A12 Bionic, a dual 12MP camera with 2x optical zoom, IP68 water resistance, Face ID, and dual-SIM. The bigger body also holds a larger 3300mAh battery, so it lasts noticeably longer than the smaller XS.

The downsides are size and price — at 208g it's heavy, two-handed by nature, and it launched as the most expensive iPhone of its year. If you wanted the largest, longest-lasting 2018 iPhone and didn't mind the bulk, the XS Max was the top of the line; the standard XS gives the same power in a lighter, cheaper, one-handed package.

Reset & recovery

Reboot

Press and quickly release Volume Up, then quickly release Volume Down, then press and hold the Side button until the Apple logo appears.

Factory reset

Open Settings > General > Reset > Erase All Content and Settings, then confirm. This erases all data.

Hard reset

To enter Recovery Mode: connect the iPhone to a computer, then press and quickly release Volume Up, then Volume Down, then press and hold the Side button until the recovery (cable) screen appears.
