The iPhone XR was Apple's 2018 value flagship — the same A12 Bionic chip as the pricier XS, in a more affordable body. The trade-off is the screen: a 6.1-inch Liquid Retina LCD rather than OLED, so blacks and contrast aren't as deep and the resolution is lower. In everyday use it still looks bright and sharp.

It uses a single 12MP rear camera (no telephoto), but the same Smart HDR and Portrait mode as the XS, so photos come close to its pricier siblings for most shots. Face ID, an aluminium-and-glass build, and IP67 water resistance round it out.

Its quiet advantage is battery life — the XR outlasts both the XS and XS Max on a charge. If you wanted the 2018 iPhone experience without paying for OLED or a second camera, the XR was the smart pick, and it shipped in the widest colour range of the trio (black, white, red, yellow, blue, coral).

Reset & recovery

Reboot

Press and quickly release Volume Up, then quickly release Volume Down, then press and hold the Side button until the Apple logo appears.

Factory reset

Open Settings > General > Reset > Erase All Content and Settings, then confirm. This erases all data.

Hard reset

To enter Recovery Mode: connect the iPhone to a computer, then press and quickly release Volume Up, then Volume Down, then press and hold the Side button until the recovery (cable) screen appears.
