The iPhone SE (2nd generation), announced on April 15, 2020 and released April 24, reused the familiar 4.7-inch body of the iPhone 8, complete with a front-mounted Touch ID fingerprint sensor and a physical Home button. What made it stand out was the flagship Apple A13 Bionic chip inside, the same processor found in the iPhone 11 lineup, giving this budget phone class-leading performance for its price.
The single 12 MP rear camera with an f/1.8 lens and optical image stabilization punched above its weight, gaining Smart HDR, Portrait mode and 4K video recording thanks to the A13's image signal processor and neural engine. A 7 MP front camera handled selfies and 1080p video. Other modern touches included Wi-Fi 6, IP67 water resistance, Qi wireless charging and a glass back over an aluminium frame.
The trade-offs were just as clear: it kept the dated thick bezels of the iPhone 8 design, offered only a single rear camera, dropped the headphone jack, and shipped with a small 1821 mAh battery. Even so, at a $399 starting price the SE was widely regarded as the value champion of its era. From about $399.
