The third-generation iPhone SE, announced on March 8, 2022 and released on March 18, once again reused the iPhone 8's compact 4.7-inch body with a Touch ID Home button and thick top and bottom bezels. Its headline upgrades were the addition of 5G connectivity and Apple's flagship A15 Bionic chip - the same system-on-chip as the iPhone 13 - giving the cheapest iPhone the same raw processing power as the year's top models. A faster image pipeline (Photonic Engine, Smart HDR 4 and Portrait mode) improved the single 12 MP rear camera despite unchanged hardware, and RAM rose to 4 GB.

What the SE did not change was just as notable. It kept the dated 750x1334 LCD, the large bezels, the lone rear camera and the Lightning port, and at $429 it cost $30 more than the 2020 model. It was the last new iPhone to ship with Touch ID and a physical Home button, and the last to use an LCD screen and 64 GB base storage. Apple positioned it as the affordable entry point to its lineup, succeeding the iPhone SE (2020); in the budget line it was eventually replaced by the iPhone 16e.
