The iPhone 16e replaced the iPhone SE as Apple's entry-level model, bringing a thoroughly modern design to the bottom of the line-up. It uses a 6.1-inch Super Retina XDR OLED display with Face ID, dropping the old Touch ID home button and LCD of the SE. Inside is the Apple A18 chip (with a 4-core GPU) and 8 GB of RAM, enough to run Apple Intelligence. Most notably, it is the first iPhone to ship with Apple's own in-house cellular modem, the Apple C1, replacing the Qualcomm modem used since the iPhone 12 (though this means no mmWave 5G).
The camera is a single 48 MP Fusion rear lens with 2x in-sensor zoom and 4K Dolby Vision video, plus a 12 MP TrueDepth front camera. It adds the Action button, a USB-C port, and an IP68 rating. The body reuses the iPhone 14 chassis with an aluminium frame, Ceramic Shield front and glass back.
It is worth being honest about the compromises: the display keeps the older notch rather than the Dynamic Island, there is only a single rear camera, the screen is limited to 60 Hz, and the phone supports only standard Qi wireless charging rather than MagSafe. At a starting price of $599 it is also considerably more expensive than the old iPhone SE, so it is a much more capable but no longer truly cheap entry point. From about $599.
