The iPhone 16 Pro Max was Apple's 2024 large flagship and the last of the titanium-framed Pro models. It kept the 6.9-inch 120Hz OLED but brought the 5x tetraprism telephoto — previously exclusive to the 15 Pro Max — to a 48MP main + 48MP ultrawide system, all on the A18 Pro chip.

Its standout additions were the Camera Control button (a dedicated capacitive shutter/zoom key) and the debut of Apple Intelligence. 4K/120fps video, a 4685mAh battery rated for up to 33 hours of playback, IP68, and USB-C round it out, in four titanium finishes including the new Desert Titanium.

A year on, the 17 Pro Max switched to an aluminium unibody, added an 8x telephoto and longer battery, and dropped titanium. If you want a still-capable flagship for less, the 16 Pro Max holds up well; if camera reach and battery life are the priority, the 17 Pro Max is the upgrade. From about $1,199.
